Garden of the Month February 2018

Patricia & Anthony Calcagno
11 Kingstone Road

When Anthony and Patricia bought their home 24 years ago, the front yard looked nothing like the lovely and tasteful mixture of trees, shrubs, ferns, grasses and plants that you see today!

The only thing that was there was the beautiful Tulip Magnolia, some over-grown shrubs, and a lot of bare soil. But, what they’ve achieved is really something to enjoy and be proud of!

Soon after arriving in Avondale, Patricia’s father, Joe, together with Anthony, planted the ivy that lines the front bank, giving order and peace, not to mention keeping the soil from eroding! Patricia’s parents dug up a Japanese Maple from their yard in Roswell as a housewarming gift, and it’s planted up the hill near the driveway, in back of a Clematis and Black Dragon Cryptomeria which offer perfectly scaled interest as well as a bit of drama!

As you walk up the drive toward the home’s front porch, everything changes! Here, you have another little world all its own! Camille Harvey has offered planning and guidance, and Patricia has used her own great ideas as well, creating a pretty mix of colors and textures that balance with wonderful pieces of hard scape collected gradually throughout the years. These include gnomes (Anthony’s favorites), and bunnies (Patricia’s passion), as well as distinctive owls placed in memory of two aunts who had a special love for them.

This garden is truly a reflection of the love they feel for one another and their home, as well as Avondale Estates.
